What is CARDAN? Cardan shaft (drive or joint shaft) is a mechanical component for transmitting torque and rotation, usually used to connect other components of a drive train that cannot be connected directly because of distance or the need to allow for relative movement between them.
The principle of operation of cardan has been known since the Middle Ages, when it was described by Italian scientist Gerolamo Cardano in detail.
Cardan is most often used in drives where large relative movements of individual parts are expected (e.g. trams, locomotives, cars, etc.).
